Sugar Rush!

A super-secret project I undertook recently as a surprise birthday present for beloved friend and family member ~Ikaruga-Riku (aka *Purgatory-Maren). He adores Wreck-It Ralph, so I decided to make our little family group into Sugar Rush characters!

Slice McCrustable is based off apple pie, ~Ikaruga-Riku is based off York Peppermint Patties, Lakritze Sauer (me, German for literal "licorice sour") is based off (sour) licorice, and Sgt. Camoreo is based off Oreo cookies n' cream.

Fun design extras! Slice's cuffs are crust, and his plaid is apple-pie dough plaid. His shoes are colored for cinnamon. ~Ikaruga-Riku's character (yet to be named), has peppermint leaves on his glasses, patty headphones, and the stripes on his sleeves are based off a bunch of patties stacked on top of each other (the pattern). Lakritze has hints of sour in her design, and a swirl gum on her necklace (a sort of licorice I am crazy for). Camoreo's leggings are camo cookies n' cream, and her jacket fluff is also whipped cookies n' cream. She has oreo goggles and her pose and name are easter eggs of Soldier from Team Fortress 2.

I wanted to try and stay as true to the style as possible, while also making the characters look a bit 3D like the racers in the movie. I also tried to implement a mix of Sugar Rush's flashy fun design with classic retro arcade style. The fruit and candy sprites are from existing 8-bit games, such as Pac Man.
